Alf Museum Exhibit

Renovation and new install of interpretive graphics for the Hall of Life Exhibit at the Raymond M. Alf Museum located on the Webb Schools campus in Claremont, California.

THE CHALLENGE
Primary Color was commissioned to produce visual and interpretive graphics for the renovation of the exhibit and effectively realize Ray Alf’s vision of shedding new light on recent discoveries through a visually exciting story based design.

We provided visual images designed to integrate media-based exhibits, and hands-on and “touch” exhibit techniques, including printing direct to various substrates, screen printing, banner fabrication and production of all related informational and directional signage. Our involvement was to include verification of dimensions, consult on printing substrates, as well as collaborate with curator, facilities manager, designers, architects and 3D fabricators. The timing of the installation was to be co-ordinated with school officials and exhibition ribbon-cutting ceremonies. The nature of the exhibition is a hands on learning experience challenging us to provide materials that can withstand heavy and enthusiastic use, possible vandalism while providing a visually rich color experience.

OUR SOLUTION
Primary’s engagement started off with initial site inspections, including all parties, to verify specs, discuss possible alternatives and present new ideas. After the options were presented and approved we provided samples and mock-ups of products prior to design phase. The architects, designers and fabricators proceeded with the design segment and Primary output color accurate samples of all visuals on the substrates specified for the unique print applications. Lead times and production schedules were co-ordinated with facilities managers and installers to support staggered installation times. During the installation process, Primary confirmed that the substrates, printed graphics and installation techniques met the requirements of the hands on experience and we prepared modifications to surpass expected usage considerations.

THE RESULTS
By integrating innovative technologies such as media-based exhibits, and hands-on and “touch” exhibit techniques, the renovation makes the sciences more accessible to varied audiences. The new exhibits also have the capacity to support California State curriculum requirements. These improvements will provide an ongoing benefit to residents of Southern California, and scientists around the world.
