Disrupting the Traditional Boundaries of Color
Chen Man is a renowned Chinese fashion photographer whose imagery can be described as fantastical and utilizes vivid color to intensify the visual language.
Most recently GUESS?, Inc. produced an end of year promotion that included a very special wall calendar, gift card holder and corporate holiday card, featuring the photographs by Chen Man, with creative direction from Paul Marciano.
Chen Mans’ images employ levels of color that are impossible to replicate using traditional 4/color process printing methods.
After evaluating the subject matter with the print producers at GUESS?, Inc. we suggested our “expanded gamut” solution. It would enhance the vibrancy of the vivid photographic colors while maintaining the delicate color balance in the skin tones and neutral areas.
We exported the original RGB digital files into our expanded gamut prepress color space and proofed the files in our customized Epson workflow.
The calendar is an oversized 22″x16″ printed on 100# Sterling Premium Gloss Cover using our expanded gamut UV inks with spot dull varnish and spot gloss aqueous coating throughout. It was printed on Primary Color’s 8/color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD UV press and was split wire-o bound with a wire hanger.
The print resolution we used was a 10 micron stochastic dot giving us the ability to push the ink densities and hold a smooth transition in the delicate skin tones.
Primary Color’s exclusive expanded gamut printing technique enabled accurate reproduction of her photographs while maintaining the intense color vibrancy associated with her work.
