Television Set Decoration for NBC
Sometimes you need to step outside the box to create the most realistic Hollywood effects. That’s where we come in. For this set decoration, NBC turned to Primary Color to bring Rio to life on their studio set right at home in Los Angeles. The set was featured in commercials to promote the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
NBC wanted to recreate the beautiful landscape of the world famous Copacabana Beach in Rio with lifelike precision, including the characteristic tile walkway through the sand and a 120’w x 16’h photo realistic stage backdrop with just the right sheen for filming. We were given a tight turnaround time. Recreating the tile walkway with actual tile would have been unnecessarily expensive and time consuming. We had a better method in mind.
We produced a fly-through animation as part of the pre-planning process to visualize how the set would come together.
We digitally reproduced the walkway in large panels. To make the tiles look real, an actual photograph of the tiles was used and all grout lines were outlined for our CNC router. We also picked random surfaces and milled different heights to create realistic 3D looking tiles.
We then sent the routed out panels through our flatbed printer for the visual treatment. Printing direct to a PVC substrate allowed the flooring to be lightweight and made the installation process much easier than if we had used real tile.
The stage backdrop was printed on a special non-glare theater fabric in one piece over 100 feet long. The radius of the background photo was reduced to counteract spatial distortion.
We were able to recreate the landscape of Rio in the most realistic way possible right at home. Filming inside a studio cut costs and increased filming control capabilities. Installation was completed in less than a day.
